Doritos - Battle of the Flavours

How do you get a younger audience to take notice of a new flavour of crisp?

Doritos Case Study

To launch Doritos’ two spicy new flavours, Hot Mexican Salsa and Thai Sweet Chilli. We enlisted the help of two fighters - a Mexican wrestler and - a Thai kick boxer to represent each flavour and allowed our audience to decide the winner.

Doritos 'Battle of the Flavours' was promoted on TV and lived online through Facebook. Over an 8 week campaign period El Macho (Hot Mexican Salsa) and Thai Phoon (Thai Sweet Chilli), literally fought it out online, performing wrestling moves on each other as suggested by our audience on Facebook. The best submitted moves each week were filmed using actors and posted online with $1,000 won for the best fight move suggested.

Once people had voted for their favourite flavour, they were then sent a threatening video message from the rival flavour calling out their allegiance to the other side. This personalised video dragged in photos from Facebook and Google Earth to really make the point… “we know who you are, we know where you live and we know who your friends are”. It was this part of the campaign that helped us pick up a Spikes Asia AWARD in the Digital category.
