How do you convince people that Google technology is actually quite impressive?

Most people are so used to using Google products for utility in their daily lives, it is hard to get them excited about the announcement of a new product launch.

As a technology company Google does a tonne of cool stuff most of us don’t ever get to hear about. They were already working with the Catlin Seaview survey to create a series of fully immersive underwater maps, stitched together with over 50,000 high resolution images. The survey has created an important ‘state of the reef’ benchmark and will help marine biologists monitor changes to the reef over time. Also it’s google maps underwater and isn’t that just a little bit exciting?

To launch Google Hangouts in Australia we decided to create something just as special – an underwater Hangout. So we invited five of the 1.7 million fans of The Catlin Seaview Survey to join a Google Hangout live with the team on the Great Barrier Reef in the waters off Cairns.
